Programming Options for Students with Advanced Learning Needs

At all levels: Differentiation strategies are used to extend learning for students, especially in their area(s) of strength. Some schools have cluster-grouped gifted students in the same class, utilizing content acceleration in their area of strength, so they can engage in extended learning together.

In addition, each school site has developed enrichment and opportunities for advancement.

Elementary Schools: Schools may provide GT enrichment opportunities and extension units, during the school day, after school and/or during the summer, depending on the needs of high potential students.

Middle Schools: Schools with sufficient numbers of advanced students offer a daily GT elective class, integrating advanced questioning techniques among other advanced learning opportunities. Clubs and extra-curricular activities extend these options.

High Schools: Advanced Placement courses have been expanded to meet advanced learning needs in a wider range of content areas. Concurrent enrollment is also an option. DCSD high schools offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities and clubs, allowing students to expand their horizons and explore their interests.
